OpenAI Bug Bounty Claude Hack: How Security Researchers Found Vulnerabilities.

A recent OpenAI bug bounty Claude hack has highlighted how powerful AI models can be used by cybersecurity researchers.

Security Researchers

According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, researchers from Hacktron AI used Anthropic’s Claude to identify vulnerabilities in OpenAI’s systems during a sanctioned security investigation. The researchers were participating in OpenAI’s bug bounty program.

How Did Claude Help?

The researchers reportedly used Claude Opus 5 to work through the attack process. The AI helped exploit a vulnerability connected to OpenAI’s community forum software.

The researchers eventually gained access to a private GitHub repository containing proprietary software. They did not obtain OpenAI’s model weights, according to the report.

The important point is that this was not presented as a random criminal attack. The researchers were working within a security-testing program designed to identify weaknesses so they could be fixed.

Why Is the Anthropic Hack of OpenAI Important?

The incident demonstrates how AI is changing cybersecurity.

Security researchers can use AI to search for weaknesses, understand complicated software and automate parts of vulnerability testing. But the same capabilities could potentially be used by attackers.

OpenAI reportedly responded by fixing the vulnerabilities, revoking affected tokens and conducting additional security checks.

The Anthropic hack OpenAI story therefore has a wider lesson. AI is becoming useful on both sides of cybersecurity: defenders can use it to find vulnerabilities, while attackers may also use similar tools to discover weaknesses.

That makes responsible security testing and strong AI safeguards increasingly important.
